How to Add a Dropdown List in Airtable

Use a Single select field when you want people to choose one value from a fixed list instead of typing their own answer.

I’ll use a Status field as the example. The choices will be Not started, In progress, and Done.

Airtable Single select field used as a dropdown list

Create the dropdown field

  1. Open the table where you want the dropdown.
  2. Click the + button to add a field, or open an existing field's settings.
  3. Choose Single select as the field type.
  4. Enter the options you want people to choose from.
  5. Click Create field or Save.

For the example, add Not started, In progress, and Done as the options.

Each record can now have one of those three values in Status. Click a cell in the field to open the dropdown and choose an option.

Set a default option

If most new records start in the same state, open the Single select field settings and set a default value such as Not started. Airtable will use that option when a new record is created in the table.

You can still change the value later by selecting another option from the dropdown.

Use more than one choice

Use a Multiple select field when one record needs several labels. For example, a project could have both Design and Development tags. Keep using Single select for one value, such as a task status or priority.
