Is Airtable Secure for Sensitive Data?

Before moving customer records, financial details, or internal documents into Airtable, you want to know whether it is secure enough for that information.

The answer depends on two things: the protection Airtable provides and the security requirements your organization needs to meet. Here is what to check before you move the data.

Airtable table protected by an access boundary

How Airtable protects stored data

Airtable encrypts data while it travels to and from its servers and while it is stored. It also keeps encrypted backups in a separate location.

See Airtable's security practices for the current details.

Who can access the data

Anyone with access to a base can see its records and fields. Read-only access stops editing. It does not hide selected information.

Field and table permissions also control editing. They can stop someone from changing a value or deleting a record. They do not hide data from someone who can already open the base.

If someone needs only part of the data, use a shared view or a published Interface. If the data needs a separate access boundary, keep it in another base. See how to protect an Airtable base from duplication and data theft for the sharing options.

Check the plan requirements

Some security and compliance features are available only on Enterprise Scale. These include organization-wide two-factor authentication, data residency, and Enterprise Key Management. Airtable also supports HIPAA workflows on Enterprise Scale when the required safeguards are enabled.

If your organization needs one of these controls, check the plan requirements before importing the data. Review Airtable's data residency options or HIPAA requirements when they apply to your work.

Before you move the data

Check these points first:

  • Who needs to open or edit the data
  • Whether some information belongs in a separate base
  • Whether any public views, Interfaces, or integrations expose more than intended
  • Whether your Airtable plan includes the controls your organization requires

For regulated or highly sensitive information, ask your security or compliance team to review Airtable before you move it. For help checking current access, see how to see and manage Airtable user permissions.
